ヨハネによる福音書１：２９－４１｢来なさい。そうすれば分かる｣

さて話の内容は１９７８年１１月３０日の寒い朝のこと。私はGettysburg
ルーテル神学校の４年生でした。その日二つの大きな　イベントがあったのです。そのイベントのことが気になって前の晩は良く眠れませんでした。
最初のイベントは朝１０AM に８人によるMaryland Synod の試験管との面接で始まりました。

私はMaryland Synod（教区）からの７人の神学４年生の一人でこの面接は牧師になる資格をいただく大切な面接でした。この面接でパスしたら牧師になる資格を与えられます。もしパスしなかったならもう１年繰り返すかもしれません。もし面接に大失敗したら４年間が水の泡です。私の心臓は朝からどきどきでした。私はこの日二人目の面接で４５分の間いろいろなことを質問されました。
The conversation started like this. “Mr. Yutaka Kishino, please come into the room.” One of the examiners escorted me to the chair that faced the seven equally anxious examiners.“Well, Mr. Kishino, how are you doing this final year of seminary? We hear that you had a good internship last year, and the rumor is that you got engaged to a lady from Lebanon, Pennsylvania while you were there. Is that correct?

I answered “Yes, yes, and yes.”They continued, “Two years ago you failed the Lutheran Confession class… but I see you are re-taking this class again this semester,Right?”“Yes.” How is your study coming along?” “Fine, fine sir.” I said.Then came a question I knew that would come soon or later. A theological question to which I was asked to respond.

The Dr. Dietrich Penner, a German doctor of Systematic Theology and the senior pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in down town Baltimore asked me this following question.
“Well, tell me what do you say to the people who are seekers of the faith in Christ?” Boy, my heart was beating so fast. I really didn’t know what to say or how to answer. After a few seconds I answered him by saying, “Dr. Pinner, it is difficult to answer this question. I must first get to know them. I must establish relationship with these people first. Somewhere along the line I have to share my faith in Jesus with them and all I can say to them is Come and See.”“No, no, no, Repentance, Mr. Kishino, repentance. That's what you have to tell them. Repent their wicked lives. Like John the Baptist we need to tell people that we are all sinners, and we need to make people know that Repentance is something you have to do before you receive God’s grace.” The Gospel means nothing until they confess their sins.”
私はドクター　ペナーにどうのこうのと反論する気はありませんでした。それをしたらこの試験に落ちてしまうと思ったからです。彼から言われたことは｢はい、はい｣で済ましました。ほかの試験官からもいろいろ質問があったのですが，それが何であったかなどぜんぜん覚えていません。ただ最後に昼食の後にもう一度会ってそこで私についての決断を知らせると言われました。

二つ目のイベントは１１時３０分にチャペルで行われました。毎週水曜日は神学４年生の一人が説教を教授と他の神学生の前でするのが習慣でした。その日の説教担当者は誰だったと思いますか？　それは私だったのです。その日の与えられた福音書の日課は今日のアンドレとペテロの話です。私は説教台に立った時ドキッとしました。なんと席の一列目には面接の八人の試験官が座っていたのです。この試験官の人たちも私が説教者であることを知ってびっくりしたでしょう。
November 30th is designated as the day to remember St. Andrew. The text was from the Gospel according to St. John, chapter 1, verses 35 to 42, yes, part of today’s Gospel lesson that I read this morning, about the story of St. Andrew. Let me read this again.

もう一度今日の福音書を読んでみます。
｢その翌日、また、ヨハネは二人の弟子と一緒にいた。そして、歩いておられるイエスを見つけて、｢見よ、神の子羊だ｣と言った。二人の弟子はそれを聞いて、イエスに従った。イエスは振り返り、彼らが従ってくるのを見て、「何を求めているか」と言われた。彼らが「ラビ、先生は、どこに泊まっておられるのですか」と言うと、イエスは、「来なさい、そうすれば分かる」と言われた。そこで彼らはついて行って、どこにイエスが泊まっておられるかを見た。そしてその日は、イエスのもとに泊まった。午後四時ごろのことである。ヨハネの言葉を聞いて、イエスに従った二人のうちの一人は、シモンペテロの兄弟アンドレであった。彼は、まず自分の兄弟シモンに会って、「私はメシアに出会った」と言った。そしてシモンをイエスの所に連れて行った。イエスは彼を見つめて、「あなたはヨハネの子シモンであるが、エファ、『岩』という意味と呼ぶことにする」と言われた。
I was happy with the message I shared with the audience. Then after lunch I went back to the room where I was interviewed before by the examining committee.
There I was told that I passed the examination, but they also shared with me two comments. First, they told me that passing me was not unanimous because they did not agree that my theological answer was good enough, but said that they were in all in agreement that I have great enthusiasm to do the ministry and that they appreciated my message at the chapel. I must say that I am a pastor today only by the grace of God.

今日の説教の残った時間、私がチャペルで説教した内容をお話しましょう。まず、アンドレがイエスに従っていった最初の弟子であったことを覚えてください。ところで、他のイエス様の１２弟子のみんなの名前、口に出していえますか？アンドレとペテロの他にマタイ、ヨハネ、ヤコブ、もう一人のヤコブ、トマス、ユダ　イスカリオット、もうひりのユダ、フィリポ、バルトマイ、タダイがいます。

この１２弟子の中でペテロのことは一番多く書かれています。ペテロは新約聖書の二つの書簡を書きました。使徒言行録の中で３０００人が洗礼を受けた時、説教をしたのはペテロです。新約聖書に彼の名前は１５３回出てきます。それだけ彼は有名なのです。ペトロの弟のアンドレの名前は聖書に１２回だけしか書いてありません。イエス様が五つのパンと２匹の魚で５０００人の人たちを満腹さしてくれた時、そのパンと魚を提供した少年をイエス様の元に連れてきたのはアンドレです。ユダヤ人でない外国人を最初にイエス様のもとに連れてきたのもアンドレです。彼はスポットライトの下にいた男ではありませんでした。しかし彼によって多くの人たちがイエス様の所に来るようになったのです。『来なさい。そうすれば分かる』は彼のモットーです。英語では、“Come and See”です。私たちは人を変えることはできません。しかしイエス様はそれができます。私たちの役目は多くの、いろいろな人たちをイエス様のところに連れて行ってあげることです。イエス様がその後の必要なことをなさってくださいます。

If Jesus has met your need, then tell somebody who has a need. If you have encountered Jesus and you know that you have been saved by Him… then tell somebody about that. If someone brought you to Jesus …bring someone else to Him. This was the type of influence Andrew had. And this is type of influence you too can have. Let me share with you the following story. And with that I will conclude my message this morning.

In 1934, Albert, a 24 year old farmer became a Christian. He was so full of enthusiasm that he filled a truck with people and took them to a meeting to hear about Jesus.
There was a good-looking farmer’s son who Albert especially wanted to bring to the meeting, but this young man was difficult to persuade. He didn’t seem too interested in Christianity.

Eventually, Albert managed to persuade him to come by asking him to drive the truck. When he arrived, Albert’s guest decided to go in and he was soon “Spellbound” by the teachings from the Bible. He began to have thoughts that he had never known before. He went back each night to the meetings to hear more, until one night he went forward and gave his life to Jesus Christ.

Since that day this young truck driver has spoken to at least 250 million people about Jesus and he became the spiritual advisor to the last nine Presidents.
The young truck driver was of course, Billy Graham. We may not become a great preacher and evangelist like Billy Graham. But every one of us can invite someone to Jesus like Albert. 　
私はここにいる皆さんがまだイエス様のことを知らない人たちを教会に誘ってくださるようにお願いします。 そして、すべての人たちが神様の慈しみと愛を私たちの群れの中で経験できるよう祈ります。アーメン。
